What is the most popular web content of all time?

Have you ever wondered what is the most popular and most viewed content on the web?  Perhaps you suspect it should be some deeply intellectual articles, some incredible news stories, some of the world’s most popular entertainers?  Maybe you would expect the most viewed content on the web to reveal something about our societies and our world?  Though the web is a fantastic place for business and relationships and has grown to be centered on social networking the most popular content on the web still reveals that the internet is primarily a place for being entertained.

What is the most viewed YouTube video of all time?

The top four most popular YouTube videos are all music videos!  Is it a surprise to you that Justin Bieber is currently holding top spot with over 472 million views on his Baby video featuring Ludacris?  Lady Gaga, Shakira and Eminem round out the top four.

On Digg, what is the most Dugg story of all time?

Digg users show that they believe in themselves with their top four most dugg articles of all time.  The top article is basically a petition requesting diggs and expressing frustration with how certain power users are controlling digg. Searches online show that Digg has had articles with over 50,000 diggs but these articles can no longer be found by searching their database.  I wonder if some articles were removed or misplaced during the switch over?  In any case the top article is now showing 23,197 diggs.

What happened to MyLikes? A frustrated review.

mylikes review frustrated with scams and false advertisingI don’t know if I Like, MyLikes anymore.  This MyLikes review will let you know why I’m seriously disappointed with the service as of late.  Though I have made money with MyLikes and have found numerous quality products to promote (in the past) lately my feelings have changed.  Though MyLikes has received a lot of great reviews and has proven itself as a money maker for many using it to earn cash through twitter or facebook, I’ve become quite jaded with the MyLikes service and am  increasingly unimpressed with the quality of opportunities available on MyLikes.  Some of my greatest concerns lie with the fact that MyLikes is now directly giving members an opportunity to promote scams and false advertising!

MyLikes Review: Promoting Scams with MyLikes

Here’s a MyLikes opportunity that you can promote and earn from clicks, but beware you would be promoting a scam.  The “Make Money with Google Course” uses the good name of google to con people into believing they can earn money working from home by doing who knows what, but first you have to buy the course (don’t worry you can get it for only $15 instead of $97 like everyone else!).   I don’t really feel bad for people who fall for scams like this, who in their right mind pays an employer to employ them?  But anyway, it’s still NOT RIGHT that MyLikes is allowing an advertiser to use this service to promote and push scams.

make money with google scam mylikes reviewThe above scam has been debunked by Snopes, there are a lot of variations of the wording (including the Make Money with Yahoo version) but you can rest assured Google isn’t hiring and paying anyone to work from home.  (Find out the details from snopes research, here.)

Promoting False Advertising on MyLikes

Or if you like you can promote some ads that say one thing but actually redirect to something totally different.  There are a number of variations on the below opportunity, and the advertiser will gladly pay you $.15 per clicks from within the United States… while the suggested tweet says “This is SO COOL! Enter your name in this site and in seconds find out who has been searching for u on the net!” and the advertiser link is posted as whosearchingforyou.com, when clicked the site actually redirects to coupondealsdaily.com.  In addition can you explain to me how this title and picture have anything to do with anything!?!?

mylikes false advertising 2 scam MyLikes review

Promoting Plain Garbage on MyLikes

Besides scams and straight up false advertising there is now just a LOT of garbage opportunities on MyLikes that I would never take.  I’ve written about blogging integrity over at my friend Ileane’s blog, Basic Blog Tips, you can read that article here.  I want my twitter followers to trust and respect my tweets, to know that the things I’m promoting (whether I’m paid to or not) are worthy of their attention.   In the past I’ve mistakenly promoted ads that I wish I hadn’t (and now I always follow the URL and check what I’m tweeting about BEFORE I click publish).  If I’m going to promote something I want it to be quality and worthwhile, not like A LOT of the opportunities available on MyLikes these days.  Take a look at some of these offers you could tweet out and get paid for, “Can you tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese? Take this quiz!” are you serious?  Or promote ask.com with the wonderfully thought out tweet “Did you know what Barbie’s real name is?”. Perhaps if you’re a health nut you can promote Resveratrol… which has been claimed by some researchers to potentially be responsible for the positive effects that red wine has on cardiovascular health.  Personally I wouldn’t want my name and reputation attached to tweets for any of these silly and ridiculous things (though some of them may well be legitimate).  My online integrity is too important to try and make money by pushing useless, and unhelpful content on my followers and readers.

Where are you at with MyLikes?  Like it, Love it, Hate it?

It’s your turn.  MyLikes? I don’t know if I like MyLikes anymore…  Where are you at with the service.  Do you use it?  Have you noticed the quality of opps has changed?  Or perhaps you get excellent opportunities that fit with your niche and earn you a good chunk of cash?  Or maybe you don’t care and you’ll promote anything – if the fools click it that is their problem… Let’s hear your thoughts.  If you agree or disagree share your MyLikes review here in the comments.

Stop the CRTC from allowing Internet Metering in Canada

canada internet providers raising price info carnivoreAre you a Canadian Internet user?  If you are then there is something afoot that requires your attention.  In our beloved Canada, Internet Providers are cracking down on our apparently ‘excessive’ internet usage.

In Canada Internet providers are attempting to monopolize the market, and raise the price of residential high-speed internet access.  Providers such as Telus (in Alberta and British Columbia), Bell (in Ontario and Quebec) and Shaw are looking to put a cap on our home internet usage, meter everything you do online and charge you through the roof if you go over your limit.  The decision essentially says that unlimited internet plans will cease to exist and downloading limits will be drastically reduced for customers of these ISP’s.   Thankfully Canada’s internet regulator the CRTC has launched a review of  this decision.

Are you looking forward to a future where your ISP will charge you per byte and bit, the same way they do with your phone?  If this happens we will end up in a situation where we pay MORE for LESS internet.

Usage Based Billing, What is it?

“Large ISPs charge their customers based on usage-based caps that specify the maximum amount of bandwidth they can use for internet activities like streaming video and movies, talking on Skype or uploading and downloading data. Customers who exceed the cap pay “overage” charges of up to $2.50 per gigabyte unless they bought insurance.

Bell says usage-based billing is necessary to reduce network congestion and discourage heavy internet users from using an unfair amount of bandwidth.

However, consumer advocates say imposing the caps on small ISPs would lead to higher internet prices, discourage the use of new services such as Netflix and make it impossible for smaller internet providers to offer different packages than large ISPs, utlimately reducing competition and consumer choice. Netflix allows people to stream unlimited high-definition video over the internet to their TVs for a monthly fee and uses a large amount of bandwidth.”

The above excerpt is from an article at CBC News, read more.

CRTC Confirms Re-Examination on ruling

The CRTC has confirmed that it is re-examining its rulings on the way small internet service providers – and therefore their customers – are billed by large ISPs like Bell, and is seeking public comments as part of that review.

YOU can help prevent this from moving forward by being pro-active and using your voice to let the CRTC know that you’re NOT happy with big ISPs trying to corner the market.  How would you feel about having a 25 GB limit on your monthly bandwidth (up and down!)?  I know for myself I’ve transferred over 25 gigabytes in the last 30 hours alone.  If I was capped at 25 for a month I’d be paying more than triple my current rate to continue using the internet the way I do, (and that may be a conservative estimate).

A Major Problem with Usage Based Billing

One significant issue that threatens the integrity of internet service providers and there eagerness to bill us extra for our metered internet usage, is the fact that they don’t seem able to meter us accurately at all.  In fact there are plenty of reported cases of people (smart techy people!) who know how to track their own usage, and are discovering SERIOUS and blatant discrepancies between what their own computers and their ISP is telling them.  Plenty of cases in fact that show without a doubt that ISP’s are claiming almost DOUBLE what the actual usage may be.  And these aren’t just allegations either, take a look at this screenshot from Bell’s customer service site taken on Wednesday February 9th.

bell rip off internet metering tracking canada internet providers

What YOU CAN DO to let the CRTC know how you feel, and put a STOP to this decision.

Step 1.
Go to the CRTC website where you can share your opinion.  You have until March 28th to comment.  The link to the CRTC review of billing practices for wholesale residential high-speed access is here.

Step 2.
Sign the online petition and stop the meter on your internet use.  The petition can be found here and will be submitted to the CRTC by openmedia.ca.

Step 3.
Contact your local MP.  You can find out who your MP is and there contact information by using the Government of Canada website, here is a link to the Member of Parliament directory.
Get a hold of your MP and let them know your feeling on this issue.

Are you a Poker Star?

pokerstarsPoker is HUGELY popular, and the online poker industry is continuing to explode.  Boys and men all over the world are signing up with the dream of becoming the next Daniel Negreanu.  I don’t yet play poker online but I must say I’m tempted to start, it’s one of those dreamy things that sets a person thinking they could become rich over night.  I have to offer warning about online gambling only in the context that you must watch for shady and new poker sites and only put your money where it will be safe.  At last count I would suspect there to be at least a dozen legit big name poker sites for you to gamble at online.  If I could recommend only one based on my limited research it would be at poker stars.  I checked pokerstars.com earlier and discovered an astounding 200,878 players currently online!

PokerStars was established in the Netherlands in 2004, there are more cash game tables at PokerStars than anywhere else on the internet, and famous players like Daniel Negreanu, Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker all make there online poker homes here and can actually be found playing from time to time as well.  PokerStars is the BIGGEST online poker operator in the world, and thus has built itself an established reputation.

Online rumors abound about shady poker sites with rigged systems, so if you’re at all considering jumping into the online poker world, do yourself a favor and go where you can rest assured you’ll get paid out when you win!  PokerStars has an excellent customer support team, though the only method of contacting them is via email.   Research shows that customer sent emails are always answered promptly and professionally.  To the best of my knowledge, PokerStars has yet to drop the ball on a legitimate customer service complaint. This reveals an incredible reputation and is a significant factor in PokerStars’ success.

Do you gamble online?  Share your thoughts in the comments.
